What Charities am I cycling for?

At last then, I've decided which Charities to cycle for. I'm going to cycle for 2 charities - The Rossendale Trust and Christian Relief Uganda. Click on the links below to find out more about each Charity.

Any donations for The Rossendale Trust can be made on my fundraising page with "Virgin Money Giving"

My aim is to raise £5000 altogether, so ask your friends to sponsor me too!! Cheers my dears!

Day 1 -sorted!

Spent a few days down in Cornwall checking out what to expect on Day 1 of LEJOG. Geoff and I cycled to Lands End from Penzance (Marazion) via Mousehole and then back to Penzance via St Buryan and Newlyn about 35 miles in total. Then another day we cycled out to Lizard Peninsula via Helston and back (47 miles); so I have done the first day, not sure I have done the official route but I managed the route we did just fine - got up all the hills Cornwall through at us. Needless to say very pleased and feeling happy that come July 1st, I'll sleep slightly better knowing what's in store.

This is me at Lands End, made it all very real seeing the place - roll on July 2nd!

39,000 calories - Lands End to John O'Groats

Very excited!! - have had the details of the route sent through; I mapped this out on a programme called Mapometer. The programme has worked out that I am going to use up approximately 39,000 calories over the whole of the ride (18 days). I've worked out, that it means I can eat

3300 calories/day!!

YES!! Cakes, Mars bars, cream teas here I come!!

This is the route I'll be taking;
just over 1000miles.

Cycling 4 days on the trot!!

Have been out 4 days on the trot this week:

Sunday: 48 miles with Macclesfield Wheelers
Monday: 18 miles with new Personal Trainer (Rich)
Tuesday: 38 miles to mum & dad's in Romiley
Wednesday: 31 miles along Middlewood Way
TOTAL miles: 135 miles

Have got to work up to going out 6 days on the trot, and doing 330 miles (55 miles per day). That's approximately 75% of what I'll have to do on LEJOG. Eleven weeks left to do that in. That's achievable!!

So, on Monday I had my first session with Rich Storer - personal trainer for cyclists. Assessment ride - went well I thought, Rich's feedback:
  • Riding position on bike - Good
  • Pedalling style - Good
  • Base level of fitness - Good
  • Bike handling going downhill - Needs Help!
  • Hill climbing skills - Needs Help!
I knew the last 2 (hence why I approached Rich!!) - but was well pleased with the first 3 comments! We meet next Monday for endurance training uphill, aarrgh! Needs to be done, bring it on!

Training on track!!

Reviewing my training, pleased to say I have done everything I set out to do in March:

Planned                             Actual
SC360                                SC360
Strength Training x10         Strength Training x10

Bike Rides x 9               Bike Rides x 12                  Total = 395 miles           Total = 403 miles
            for month                            for month

Although I had to do 3 rides more than planned, to get the mileage in - I'm sure that isn't a problem!!

Have finished at SC360 now for the "summer" - rest of training is now on the bike - with a bit of running thrown in. I am starting "couch to 5km" training tomorrow. Last time I tried this I managed to get up to being able to run for 10 minutes without stopping - but had to stop because my left ITB (ileo-tibial band)  started playing up (ie hurt like mad!!). Hoping to get a bit further this time - the running certainly helped my cardiovascular strength, I noticed I had more "puff" to keep going on the hills! That's what I need....
